With the creation of this blog, it probably wasn't all-too expected after reading our first megaton post that our site was mainly about speculation posts, but really, 95% of the fun comes from speculation! We're not entirely sure if there's even going to be a Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS yet, and yet we're doing this as a crazy fan project just for the heck of it! Hope you enjoy these posts, 'cause you'll be a seeing a LOT of them between both Zantok (Lister) and J (myself).
Now, as I brought up in the first post, it'd make sense if this game was focused mainly on the Game Boy and DS side of things right? It is on a handheld after all. Just as Melee focused on Nintendo 64 games and Brawl on GameCube, it's an idea held by the general consensus that the 3DS take would follow a similar path in representing - mostly - the generations directly behind it.
Who better than to start our "Character Chances" feature than Professor Hershel Layton, the gentlemanly detective with an all-too stylish top hat from the series of the same name? In a few short years, Layton has become one of the better known new Nintendo characters, and as such would stand good chances of making it into the next set of Smash games -- probably on both handheld and home console iterations. I'd give him a good 90% from the get-go just because of that!
His move-set could revolve around key objects in his games, such as the devil's flute, the diabolical box, and even his own hat! Or, it could be related to Layton's puzzle-solving antics in some ways; as in, he could use the items found in puzzles as his special moves. It'd be a bit harder to pull off, but it'd probably make for a more interesting set of moves! Another idea is the incorporation of the Layton Mobile in some way, shape, or form: perhaps as a final smash or side special.
As should be expected, the fun for the series' inclusion doesn't stop with a playable character! An assist trophy could easily be made of the ever-ready apprentice, Luke, somehow, and a stage of one of the interesting locations in London could easily be made. One from "Unwound Future" which somehow changed from the present to the future would be pretty cool. And the music! Professor Layton's music is already fantastic, and I can imagine a good amount of the series' music used in Smash being carbon copies. If we get at least Layton's theme redone as something even more epic? I'd be a very happy fanboy. Either way I would be; I'd just be happier.
